Amaharashi Coast

natureOff the trail — and worth it

A stretch of shore on Toyama Bay with the Tateyama range standing directly across the water, snow-covered through the winter. It is a short walk from a small JR station, costs nothing, and keeps no opening hours.

  2. ~25 minJR train, about hourly
  3. Get off atAmaharashi Station (JR Himi Line)
  4. On foot
  5. Amaharashi Coast

The sweet spot

This is not a hidden place. It is Toyama's signature view and photographers know it well. What is said less often is that the morning works against it: the range lies to the east, so before noon it sits in its own backlight, and the afternoon is when the snow and the ridge come apart.

What to look for — in walking order

  1. Yoshitsune-iwathe shrine-topped rock beside the station that gave the place its name
  2. The Himi Line tracksa single line threaded between the coast road and the sand
  3. Michi-no-Eki Amaharashia roadside station whose second and third-floor decks stay open around the clock
  4. Onna-iwathe pine-topped stack offshore that sits in front of the range
  5. The beachshallow sand that opens as a swimming beach in summer

How to actually get there

  1. Takaoka Station → Amaharashi Station (JR Himi Line, about 20 min).
  2. Amaharashi Station → the shore (walk about 5 min south-east on the coast road).
  3. Follow the sand as far as Yoshitsune-iwa, then take the stairs up to the decks at the roadside station for the wider frame.
  4. Return the same way, or stay on the Himi Line to its end at Himi.
JR Himi Line from Takaoka
Takaoka Station →(JR Himi Line, about 20 min)→ Amaharashi Station, then a short walk to the shore. Local trains run at roughly hourly intervals, so fix the return before you set out. Arriving by shinkansen, Shin-Takaoka is one station from Takaoka on the JR Johana Line.
Return from Amaharashi Station
The same line runs back to Takaoka, where the Ainokaze Toyama Railway continues toward Toyama and Kanazawa. Service is hourly rather than frequent, so read the departure board when you arrive rather than when you leave.

About the place

The peaks across the water belong to the 3,000-metre class, and Amaharashi looks at them over sea rather than over land. A warm-current bay in front, a wall of snow behind it — that stacking is what fills the frame. Two rock stacks stand offshore, Onna-iwa and Otoko-iwa, and Onna-iwa sits directly in front of the range. The shore is part of Noto Hanto Quasi-National Park and is listed among Japan's 100 best beaches (Nihon no Nagisa Hyakusen). The JR Himi Line runs along the top of the sand, close enough that the trains enter the picture.

How to enjoy it

For definition, come in the afternoon. Before noon the sun sits east of the range and the mountains are into their own light; later it swings behind you and the ridgeline and the snow separate. The clearest days come in winter. For atmosphere instead of definition, the hour around sunrise is the other option, and on cold winter mornings a sea fog called kearashi sometimes lifts off the water.

Background & history

The place name comes from a story about Minamoto no Yoshitsune. A fleeing party is said to have waited out a sudden shower under a rock here — ama-harashi, the rain clearing. The rock still carries his name and has a small shrine set on top of it. The wider shore is protected as a national place of scenic beauty under a title taken from Basho's Oku no Hosomichi, which calls this water Ariso-umi.

Before you go

Cash
The coast is free and there is no gate to pass. A one-way adult ticket from Takaoka was 240 yen at the time of checking, and the gate at Amaharashi takes ICOCA. The decks at the roadside station cost nothing either.
Before you go
Nothing here shuts, but the view can simply be absent. From spring into summer the air holds moisture and the range often stays hazy, so that half of the year can give you the bay and nothing behind it. Winter delivers the clear days and, with them, a cold wind straight off the water.
Another way
A seasonal sightseeing bus, the Toyama Buri-Kani Bus, runs from Toyama Station to the Iwasaki stop at the coast, but only on set dates (check the operator for times). On Sundays a sightseeing train, the Belle Montagne et Mer, works the same Himi Line out of Takaoka.
After you get off
From Amaharashi Station, cross toward the sea and follow the coast road south-east on foot. The sand, the roadside station and Yoshitsune-iwa all sit inside that short stretch.
