Yobuko Morning Market

foodOff the trail — and worth it

A street market on the east side of Yobuko's fishing harbour in northern Saga. Stallholders set out fresh fish, dried seafood, vegetables, pickles and cut flowers along one street, and pack the whole thing away again before the afternoon.

The sweet spot

This is a named market rather than a hidden one, and Saga's own tourism site puts it beside Wajima and Takayama. What thins the crowd is the clock. The market exists only between dawn and midday, so anyone arriving from Fukuoka after lunch finds an ordinary street with nothing on it.

How to actually get there

  1. JR Karatsu Station → Karatsu Oteguchi Bus Center (short walk).
  2. Oteguchi → Yobuko (Showa Bus, about 30 minutes).
  3. Yobuko stop → Asaichi-dori (1-3 min on foot); start at the western end and work east.
  4. Finish at the fishing harbour on the west side of the street before the stalls come down at midday.
Showa Bus from Karatsu Oteguchi
JR Karatsu Station to Karatsu Oteguchi Bus Center is a short walk, and Showa Bus services bound for Yobuko run from there, taking about 30 minutes to the Yobuko stop. The same buses can also be boarded at Karatsu Station. Fares are paid on board and depend on distance.
Return from the same Yobuko stop
The same Showa Bus route runs back through the peninsula to Oteguchi and Karatsu Station. Services out here are not frequent, so read the posted departure times before you start along the stalls rather than after. If you plan to eat squid in Yobuko afterwards, check the early-afternoon departures first.

About the place

Yobuko sits at the tip of the Higashi-Matsuura peninsula, where the currents of the Genkai Sea run past the headland. The market takes over Asaichi-dori, a street of about 200 metres on the east side of the fishing harbour, and it uses no hall and no roof. Trestles and parasols go up along both kerbs in the early morning and come down again before the afternoon. What is on them comes from the water and the fields behind it: fresh fish, dried fish and processed seafood, vegetables, fruit, pickles, cut flowers, confectionery and ceramics. Karatsu's tourism association calls Yobuko a squid town, and split squid hung on frames to dry in the sun stands at the kerb between the stalls.

How to enjoy it

Stalls run from 7:30 in the morning until 12:00, and because opening times differ from stand to stand, the first hour or so is when the fullest row is out. The market is held every day except 1 January. Prices are settled in conversation rather than on a label, so carry small notes and take the row slowly.

Background & history

Yobuko has worked as a Genkai Sea harbour town for centuries, and the market on Asaichi-dori is traced to the Taisho era, when the street first took shape as a row of shops and the trade moved outside onto the pavement. Saga Prefecture's tourism office places it among Japan's three great morning markets, with Wajima in Ishikawa and Takayama in Gifu. The stands have stayed on the same street since, and they are still run largely by the women of the port, who set the price face to face and throw in an extra when the conversation goes well.

Before you go

Cash
The market costs nothing to walk. Stalls are small and cash is the safe assumption. There is a free car park for the market and a larger paid harbour car park charged at 100 yen per hour.
Before you go
Opening times differ from stall to stall and each stallholder keeps their own days off, so the number of stands varies from morning to morning. Everything stands in the open air with no cover, and the street is cleared by midday.
Another way
By car it is about 60 minutes from the Taku interchange on the Nagasaki Expressway. From JR Karatsu Station a taxi takes about 30 minutes, which is the practical option if you miss the early buses.
After you get off
The Yobuko bus stop is beside the Yobuko tourist information centre, at the western end of the street. The walk in takes one to three minutes depending on which end of the row you want to start from.
