Fukuoka Tower
A mirrored seaside tower standing at the edge of the sand at Seaside Momochi. One bus from Hakata Station reaches it, and the observation floors take in Hakata Bay and the whole of Fukuoka in a single turn.

The sweet spot
This is the city's landmark rather than a quiet corner, and the deck fills up on clear evenings. What changes the visit is the hour, not the season: the same window gives you the shape of the bay in daylight and, an hour later, the city with its lights on. The beach and park at the foot are free and open, so the outing still works if you never buy a ticket at all.

How to actually get there
- Hakata Station → Fukuoka Tower Minami-guchi (Nishitetsu city bus, about 25 minutes).
- Bus stop → tower entrance (about two minutes on foot).
- Lift to the top deck, then walk down through the two floors below it.
- Leave on the sea side and cross the sand to Marizon before heading back.
- Nishitetsu bus, direct from Hakata Station
- Hakata Station → Fukuoka Tower Minami-guchi by Nishitetsu city bus, about 25 minutes. Services toward Momochihama leave from the bus terminal at the station through the day. From the stop, the tower entrance is roughly a two-minute walk.
- Back to Hakata or Tenjin
- The same stops work in reverse: Tenjin is about 20 minutes away and Hakata Station about 25. Buses thin out late in the evening, so check the last departure posted at the stop if you stay for the night view. The subway is the fallback — Nishijin Station on the Kuko Line is about a 20-minute walk inland.
About the place
Fukuoka Tower rises 234 metres from the reclaimed waterfront of Seaside Momochi, in Sawara ward. Its section is an equilateral triangle, and the three faces carry about 8,000 half-mirror panels — the reason its operator calls the building the Mirror Sail. It is the tallest seaside tower in Japan. Momochi itself was laid out flat and low, so nothing stands between the tower and the water, and the city behind it runs unbroken back to the hills.
How to enjoy it
Go up as the light starts to drop rather than at midday. Fix the geography while it is still bright, and the same seat gives you the lit city about an hour later without moving. On the way out, turn toward the sand instead of straight back to the bus stop — a two-minute detour, and the only angle that takes in the tower whole.
Background & history
The tower was built for the Asian-Pacific Exposition of 1989, the fair known locally as Yokatopia, and doubled as the monument marking a hundred years of Fukuoka as a municipality. It opened that March. The fair stood on newly reclaimed ground, and the district around the tower — museum, broadcast studios, beach — came out of the same plan. A marker put up for one summer became the fixed point people navigate the western city by.
Before you go
- Cash
- The observation floors are ticketed, and the current rate and any combined tickets are listed by the tower. The beach and the park at the foot are free and open. Nishitetsu buses take cash as well as the nationwide prepaid IC cards — nimoca, Suica, ICOCA and the rest of the interoperable set.
- Before you go
- The deck is indoors and works in rain, though haze cuts the range badly. The tower takes a short maintenance closure in early summer and posts the dates on its official site, which is worth a look if your trip falls in late June.
- Another way
- From Tenjin, Nishitetsu buses reach the same stops in about 20 minutes. By subway, ride the Kuko Line to Nishijin Station and walk about 20 minutes north to the shore. By car it is about 15 minutes from the Fukuoka interchange.
- After you get off
- From Fukuoka Tower Minami-guchi the tower is about two minutes on foot, heading north; the entrance is at the base on the city side, away from the beach.
