About the place
Katsuyama is a hill town east of Fukui, and a silver dome sits on its edge, visible well before you reach the gate. The permanent exhibition is laid out in three zones: Dinosaur World, Earth Science, and the History of Life. Around fifty mounted dinosaur skeletons stand together on the dome floor rather than in separate glass cases, so the hall reads as one crowd of animals instead of a row of specimens. Several of them are species first described from bones dug out of this same valley. Plan a half day rather than an hour.
How to enjoy it
Doors open at 9:00 and last admission is 16:30, so arriving soon after opening gives you the dome floor early and still leaves the afternoon for the upper level. Book the timed slot before you leave your hotel — the slot, not the queue, is what decides entry. In midsummer the museum opens earlier and closes later, which makes a late-afternoon visit workable.
Background & history
The museum opened in July 2000, at the edge of the valley where the prefecture's dinosaur excavations were already running. Those digs produced several species new to science, among them Fukuisaurus and Fukuiraptor, both carrying the name of the prefecture. A large expansion completed in 2023 added exhibition space and reworked the entrance side of the building. A separate outdoor field station lets visitors split rock for fossils on a booked session.
Before you go
- Cash
- Admission to the permanent exhibition was 1,000 yen for adults at the time of checking. Tickets are normally bought in advance for a set date and time, so buying at the door on a busy day may not be possible.
- Before you go
- Opening is 9:00 with last admission at 16:30 as confirmed on the date shown, and the hours are extended in midsummer. Closure days are set through the year, so check the official calendar before you buy a timed ticket. The outdoor fossil-dig session is reserved separately from museum admission.
- Another way
- On weekends and public holidays a direct sightseeing bus runs from the east exit of Fukui Station to the museum, with reservation required. By car, there is a large free car park at Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest.
- After you get off
- Katsuyama Station is not within walking distance of the museum. Take the connecting bus or a taxi for the last stretch uphill.
