Aoshima Shrine

— An island shrine ringed by wave-cut rock

cultureThe classic — done right

A small subtropical island south of Miyazaki city, given over entirely to a shrine. Palms fill the middle, a ribbed rock shelf called the Devil's Washboard rings the shore, and a footbridge carries you across.

JR Nichinan Line from Miyazaki Station
Miyazaki Station →(JR Nichinan Line)→ Aoshima Station, then about a 10-minute walk east to Yayoi Bridge. Since the March 2026 revision the Minami-Miyazaki to Aoshima section runs roughly one train an hour, two in some periods, so check the next departure rather than treating it as turn-up-and-go. By car the city and regional tourism sites give about 25 minutes from Miyazaki Station.
Return from Aoshima Station
Walk back over the bridge and along the same street to Aoshima Station for the Nichinan Line to Miyazaki. Aoshima is unstaffed, so tap an IC card (such as SUGOCA) at the simple card reader or settle the fare on board. Evening services thin out well before the last train, so pick your return in advance rather than at the end of the day.

About the place

Aoshima is a low island about 1.5 kilometres around, lying just off the coast south of Miyazaki city and joined to the mainland by a footbridge. Its interior is a dense stand of livistona palms and other subtropical plants, protected as a Special Natural Monument. The shrine sits inside that grove, and the island works as its precinct rather than as a park with a shrine placed in it. Around the shore runs the rock shelf that everyone calls the Devil's Washboard, a Natural Monument in its own right. Two designations on one small island, and the walk from the bridge takes in both.

How to enjoy it

Check the tide before you set out. The washboard is most itself at low water, when the ledges come clear of the sea and the pools between them open up. The amulet counter opens at 8:00 in summer and 8:30 in winter outside the New Year period, so an early start still finds everything running.

Background & history

The shrine enshrines Hikohohodemi and Toyotamahime, the couple at the centre of the Umisachi-Yamasachi myth, and its own tradition places the island where the hunter brother came back from the sea god's palace. For most of its history ordinary people were barred from setting foot here; a head priest petitioned the domain lord, the ban was lifted, and the island has been open to anyone since. The palm grove was later protected as a Special Natural Monument, and the ring of wave-cut rock around it as a Natural Monument.

Before you go

Cash
The precinct and the bridge are free. Amulets, the Musubi-koyori paper cords and the discs for the throwing rite are received at the counter beside the hall. Aoshima Station is unstaffed, so use an IC card or settle the fare on board.
Before you go
The island takes weather from every side, and the Nichinan coast sits on the typhoon track, so rough days are worth planning around. The rock shelf is slippery wherever it is wet, and it goes back under the surf as the tide comes in.
Another way
Miyazaki Kotsu route buses from Miyazaki Station also serve the area: get off at the Aoshima stop and the shore and bridge are a short walk. Driving, there are paid lots near the approach, plus a free lot at Aoshima Station open 8:00 to 17:00.
After you get off
From Aoshima Station the approach road runs east to the beach and ends at Yayoi Bridge. The bridge is flat and short, and from its far end the shrine gate is a few minutes in through the palms.
