Kobe
Kobe Between Mountain and Sea
Kobe reads as one slope: Western merchant houses on the hill, a Chinatown you cross in minutes, a herb garden reached by ropeway, and the harbour tower at the bottom of it.

Kitano Ijinkan
A hill of preserved 1868-era Western merchant houses, best at opening before the crowds.
What to look for
- Weathercock House — the district's icon, a 1909 brick residence topped by its namesake weathervane, open 9:00–17:00
- Moegi House — the former home of an American consul, another Western mansion open to visitors
- Hillside lanes — sloping streets between the ijinkan that open out to views over the port and Osaka Bay
- 02
Kobe · Motomachi · From Osaka Station · ~30-40 min
Nankinmachi
A famous Chinatown you can walk end to end in minutes — quietest at its 10:00 opening.
What to look for
- Choanmon Gate (east entrance) — the white-marble east gate, built in 1985; the district's main and most photographed entrance
- Nankinmachi Square — the central plaza with a hexagonal vermilion pavilion about 6.8 metres tall, and twelve zodiac animal statues around its edge
- Street-food stalls on the main lanes — steamed pork buns, dumplings and other Chinese snacks along the two main lanes
- 03
Kobe · Kitano · From Sannomiya Stn · ~25 min
Nunobiki Herb Gardens
Japan's largest herb garden on a Rokko mountainside, with a city-and-harbour panorama that changes from morning light to evening glow.
What to look for
- Lower ropeway station & Nunobiki Falls view — a glimpse of the historic waterfall as the gondola ascends
- Midway station — Welcome Garden — the first terrace; herb shop and seasonal plantings; alighting here allows a walk-up route through the garden
- Summit terrace — panorama lawn — 360-degree views over Kobe city, the port, and Osaka Bay; the widest outlook on the mountain
- 04
Hyogo · Kobe waterfront · From Shin-Kobe Stn · ~35 min
Kobe Port Tower
A 108-metre hand-drum silhouette made of 32 steel pipes, the world's first pipe-structure tower — reopened in April 2024 with an open rooftop deck over the harbour.
What to look for
- The pipe structure itself — 32 straight steel pipes producing a curved hyperboloid — the first tower in the world built this way, and best read from directly beneath
- The rooftop deck — the glass-walled open-sky floor added in the April 2024 refit, giving 360 degrees over the harbour
- The harbour at dusk — container cranes, ferries and the Rokko range behind the city, with the lit shoreline meeting black water after dark
